Sean Clancy

Technology executive · Scottsdale, Arizona

The hard part of new technology isn't the technology. It's getting people to actually use it.

I build the technology organization and the platform a company needs once it has outgrown both. Twenty years leading technology in commercial real estate, most recently as CTO of Matthews Real Estate Investment Services.

What I do

Leading technology

I'm open to CTO and head-of-technology roles at companies with real revenue whose systems and engineering practices haven't kept up. Real estate is home turf, but the problems travel.

Advisory work

I'm also available for advisory work: technology strategy, platform modernization, AI adoption and governance, and technology due diligence for investors.

Selected results

Replaced Salesforce with a platform people chose to use

We built our own CRM and workflow platform around how agents actually work and rolled it out piece by piece, with no big-bang cutover. Every agent was on it within nine months.

Built a technology organization from almost nothing

Grew a team of 25+ across engineering, product, and IT while the firm expanded to 28 offices.

Scaled software delivery from 30 to 150 people

Grew the organization across the US and India, and kept quality and predictability improving as we grew.

Got non-engineers shipping real software with AI

Marketing, research, and underwriting teams build their own production tools, inside guardrails that keep data and security intact.

Things I've built lately

I still build. It's the fastest way I know to understand what new tools can and can't do.

In progress

A proving ground for AI agents

An arena that breaks a working software stack on purpose, then scores how well different AI agent designs find and fix the damage, including what happens when an agent trusts a bad note left by an earlier one.

In use

A personal CRM built on notes and AI

A network tracker for my own job search: plain notes for every contact, views that surface who's due for a follow-up, and an AI assistant that logs calls, drafts outreach, and keeps the whole thing current.

Open source, coming soon

A fair way to hand out gifts

Everyone ranks what they want, an assignment algorithm finds the fairest match, and the results are revealed one at a time with some theater. Built for a batch of 3D-printed figures for a team.

How I work

No big-bang cutovers

Put working software in front of real users early, and replace old systems one piece at a time.

Adoption is the scoreboard

A platform nobody uses is a cost, not an asset.

Guardrails, not gates

Set the standards that let people move fast without putting the business at risk.

About

I started my career as a software developer, and fell backwards into leadership. I've spent almost two decades in the commercial real estate space, and have built out the tech organizations at two of the top 10 players in that space. Most recently spent five years as CTO of Matthews Real Estate Investment Services.

I live in the Phoenix metro area. When I'm not working, I'm usually making something or wandering around the desert.

Let's talk

The best way to reach me is email. I'm always glad to hear about an interesting problem.
